Wildcat Girls Hockey

Building Confidence. Creating friendships. Developing Champions on and off the ice.

Our Philosophy:

Waunakee Youth Hockey Association (WYHA) is committed to growing girls hockey by providing an inclusive, positive, and development-focused environment where every girl feels welcome on the ice.

We believe hockey helps young athletes build confidence, resilience, leadership, and lifelong friendships.

Our goal is to create pathway that allows girls to develop their skills while fostering a love for the game from their first time on skates through competitive youth hockey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should my daughter play girls hockey?

Girls hockey provides a fun, supportive environment where players can develop their skills, build confidence, make lifelong friendships, and compete alongside other girls who share a love for the game.

Does my daughter need skating experience?

No. New players are always welcome. Whether your daughter is stepping onto the ice for the first time or has previous skating experience, our coaches work with players at all skill levels.

Can beginners join?

Absolutely! Many players begin hockey at the 6U or 8U level with little or no hockey experience. Our programs are designed to teach the fundamentals in a positive and encouraging environment.

Does my daughter have to choose between girls hockey and co-ed hockey?

Girls participating in the 6U and 8U programs will skate with other girls and will be placed on all-girls teams, depending on the number of girls who register at that program level. Opportunities may exist for girls to participate in girls programming while also participating within WYHA's co-ed development structure.

What equipment is required?

Players will need standard USA Hockey-approved equipment, including a helmet with full face mask, neck guard if required by governing rules, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, skates, stick, athletic cup or pelvic protector, hockey socks, and jersey. Equipment rental or loaner gear may be available for new families.

How often do girls practice?

Practice schedules vary by age level and ice availability. Families will receive a complete practice and game schedule before the season begins. The number of practices and games will be in line with co-ed/boys teams.

Will my daughter play games?

Yes. 6U and 8U players participate in age-appropriate cross-ice or half-ice games and jamborees. Girls teams will have opportunities to play against other girls teams and co-ed teams.

What if my daughter has never played a team sport?

That's perfectly okay. Hockey teaches teamwork, communication, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Our coaches are committed to helping every player feel welcome and successful.

Can my daughter play other sports too?

Yes. Many of our players participate in soccer, softball, volleyball, gymnastics, dance, basketball, and other activities. We encourage multi-sport participation, especially at younger ages.

How do I register?

Registration information is available on the Waunakee Youth Hockey Association website each summer. Families are encouraged to register early to help with season planning.
